CEM I 52.5R Portland White Cement - Material sample
Product Overview
CEM I 52.5R Portland White Cement is a high-strength, rapid-hardening hydraulic binder produced from carefully selected raw materials, principally high-purity white limestone and kaolin clay, that are low in iron oxide and manganese. These are the compounds responsible for the grey colouration of ordinary Portland cement, and their strict control is what distinguishes white cement production from standard grey cement manufacture.
The manufacturing process follows the same fundamental steps as grey Portland cement: raw material blending, kiln clinkering at temperatures exceeding 1450°C, and intergrinding with calcium sulphate to control setting time. Modified kiln conditions and rapid clinker cooling are used to prevent re-oxidation of iron compounds and preserve the characteristic whiteness of the finished product.
The designation CEM I 52.5R indicates a minimum 28-day compressive strength of 52.5 MPa and a rapid early strength class, achieving at least 30 MPa at two days. These requirements are set by EN 197-1. Whiteness is measured using the Hunter scale or CIE L* method, with premium grades achieving values above 85%. Consistent whiteness across production batches is essential for architectural applications where colour uniformity over large surface areas is a specification requirement.
CEM I 52.5R White Cement is supplied in 25 kg bags, 1.5-tonne big bags, and bulk tanker formats, sourced from established producers in Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa.
Applications and Performance
CEM I 52.5R White Cement is the standard binder for architectural concrete where surface appearance is a primary design consideration. It is widely specified for precast cladding panels, architectural façade elements, and exposed aggregate finishes, where consistent whiteness provides a neutral base for pigmentation and ensures colour uniformity across large surface areas. In terrazzo flooring and decorative paving, white cement produces bright, clean colour tones when combined with marble aggregates and mineral pigments. The material is also used in white mortar, jointing compounds, and render systems for premium masonry construction. Its high early strength supports efficient precast production cycles, enabling demoulding at 16 to 24 hours. In grout and repair mortar formulations, the combination of high strength and whiteness makes it suitable for restoration work on historic masonry where colour matching is critical.
