Product Overview

Dolomite Powder is produced by the crushing, grinding, and classification of dolomite rock, a sedimentary carbonate mineral composed of calcium magnesium carbonate (CaMg(CO₃)₂). Dolomite is distinguished from limestone by its significant magnesium content, with a theoretical composition of approximately 30.4% CaO and 21.7% MgO in pure form. Commercial deposits vary in purity and magnesium content depending on geological origin, and source selection is critical for applications with specific chemical requirements.

Dolomite is harder than calcite, with a Mohs hardness of 3.5 to 4.0 compared with 3.0 for calcite. It is more chemically resistant to acidic environments and exhibits lower water solubility. These properties make dolomite powder a more durable filler than standard calcium carbonate in applications where abrasion resistance, weatherability, or chemical stability are important.

In the glass industry, dolomite is a primary batch raw material providing both CaO and MgO to the melt. The MgO content improves the viscosity-temperature relationship of the glass and enhances chemical durability and mechanical strength of the finished product. Specific Mg/Ca ratios are required for different glass compositions, making source selection a critical procurement decision for glass manufacturers.

In ceramics, dolomite acts as a flux and source of CaO and MgO in bodies and glazes. Its decomposition during firing releases reactive oxides that participate in ceramic phase formation, influencing densification and glaze characteristics. Dolomite powder is also used as a filler and extender in paints, coatings, adhesives, and sealants.

Form: Crystalline powder

Applications and Performance

Dolomite powder is used across industrial applications where its hardness, chemical stability, and dual calcium-magnesium chemistry provide performance advantages over single-component carbonate fillers. In glass manufacture, it supplies both CaO and MgO to the melt, where the magnesium content improves viscosity, chemical durability, and resistance to devitrification. In ceramic bodies and glazes, dolomite acts as a flux and contributes to the formation of specific crystalline phases during firing, influencing thermal expansion, mechanical strength, and surface texture. In paints and exterior coatings, dolomite powder provides improved abrasion resistance and weatherability compared with softer calcium carbonate fillers, making it suitable for masonry paints, floor coatings, and industrial maintenance coatings exposed to mechanical wear. In construction materials including mortars, renders, and dry-mix products, it contributes hardness and dimensional stability to the cured matrix.
