Product Overview

Fluorphlogopite (KMg₃(AlSi₃O₁₀)F₂) is a synthetic fluorine-containing mica produced by high-temperature fusion of a controlled mixture of silica, magnesia, alumina, potassium fluoride, and other precursor materials in an electric arc furnace. The molten material is cooled in a controlled manner to produce large, well-crystallised mica books, which are then mechanically delaminated and classified to produce platelets of the required size and aspect ratio.

Synthetic Fluorphlogopite differs from natural mica minerals, principally muscovite and phlogopite, in several important respects. The controlled manufacturing process produces a material of significantly higher purity and more consistent composition than natural mica, with heavy metal content typically below 10 ppm. The substitution of fluorine for the hydroxyl groups present in natural mica increases thermal stability, with Fluorphlogopite retaining its crystalline structure and optical properties at temperatures exceeding 1000°C, substantially higher than the 600 to 700°C limit of natural muscovite mica.

The optical properties of Fluorphlogopite are central to its use as a substrate for pearlescent pigments. Its high transparency, smooth cleavage surfaces, and refractive index of approximately 1.55 to 1.60 create strong interference colour effects when coated with thin layers of titanium dioxide or iron oxide. The uniformity of the synthetic crystal structure produces more consistent interference colours and higher brilliance than natural mica substrates.

Fluorphlogopite is also used in high-temperature electrical insulation, where its combination of high dielectric strength, low dielectric loss, and thermal stability above 1000°C makes it suitable for heating elements, furnace linings, and high-temperature electrical components.

Applications and Performance

Fluorphlogopite Synthetic Mica is used primarily as a substrate for pearlescent and interference pigments in cosmetics, automotive coatings, and decorative plastics. In cosmetic applications including eyeshadows, highlighters, lipsticks, and nail varnishes, Fluorphlogopite-based pearlescent pigments provide the optical effects of lustre, sparkle, and colour travel that are central to premium cosmetic formulations. Its high purity and low heavy metal content are essential for cosmetic-grade applications, where regulatory compliance with EU Cosmetics Regulation requires strict limits on impurities. In automotive and industrial coatings, Fluorphlogopite-based effect pigments create metallic and pearlescent finishes in basecoat and clearcoat systems, where the consistency of the synthetic substrate ensures reproducible colour and effect across production batches. In high-temperature electrical insulation, it is used in the manufacture of mica paper, mica tape, and mica boards for insulation of electric motors, generators, and heating elements operating at temperatures above the service limit of natural mica.
