Product Overview

Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GBS) is a glassy, granular by-product of pig iron production. When molten iron slag is rapidly quenched with large volumes of water, the sudden cooling inhibits crystallisation and produces an amorphous, vitreous material with latent hydraulic properties. This quenching process, known as granulation, is critical to the material's performance: the higher the glass content, the greater the potential reactivity when the material is subsequently ground and used as a cementitious binder.

GBS is the primary feedstock for Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS), which is widely specified as a supplementary cementitious material in concrete. The quality of GBS feedstock directly determines the performance of the finished GGBS product, making consistent glass content, controlled moisture, and stable chemistry essential procurement criteria for grinding plant operators.

Beyond its role as a GGBS precursor, GBS is used directly in civil engineering. Its granular form and relatively low density make it suitable as a lightweight aggregate in road sub-base construction and in the manufacture of concrete masonry units. In some markets, coarsely granulated slag is used as drainage aggregate or ground improvement fill, where its angular particle shape and chemical stability are useful properties.

ROCC Global sources GBS from integrated steelworks across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific, managing bulk vessel logistics and quality verification to ensure consistent feedstock supply to grinding operations.

Form: Granular (glassy)

Applications and Performance

The primary application of GBS is as feedstock for GGBS grinding plants, where it is dried and milled to a controlled fineness to produce a certified hydraulic binder for concrete. GBS quality, particularly glass content and chemical composition, directly governs the activity index and performance of the finished GGBS product. Secondary applications include use as a lightweight aggregate in road sub-base construction, where its angular granular form provides good compaction characteristics, and as a raw material in concrete block and masonry unit manufacture. In certain civil engineering contexts, GBS is also used as granular fill or drainage medium, where its chemical inertness and stable particle structure are the relevant properties.
