Product Overview

Hollow Glass Beads, also referred to as glass microspheres or glass bubbles, are engineered hollow spheres manufactured from borosilicate glass by a controlled high-temperature process. Glass powder is fed into a flame or hot gas stream, where surface tension forms the particles into spheres and trapped gas creates the hollow interior. The resulting microspheres combine very low density with good compressive strength, smooth spherical morphology, and the chemical inertness of borosilicate glass.

The key performance parameters are true density, isostatic crush strength, and particle size distribution. True density, the density of the glass shell and enclosed gas, typically ranges from 0.15 to 0.60 g/cm³ depending on the grade, compared with approximately 2.5 g/cm³ for solid glass beads. Replacing conventional mineral fillers with Hollow Glass Beads reduces the density of the filled compound proportionally to the loading level, enabling meaningful weight savings in composite materials and coatings.

Isostatic crush strength is the critical mechanical parameter for applications involving elevated pressure, such as deep-sea buoyancy modules and oil well cementing. Commercial grades are available with crush strengths from approximately 250 psi for low-density grades to 10,000 psi or above for high-strength grades, enabling selection of the appropriate density-strength balance for the application.

The spherical morphology reduces the viscosity of filled polymer systems compared with irregular mineral fillers at equivalent loading levels, improving processability and enabling higher filler loadings. ROCC Global sources Hollow Glass Beads from established manufacturers in Europe and Asia Pacific, with density and crush strength certification provided for each grade.

Applications and Performance

Hollow Glass Beads are used as a lightweight functional filler in composite materials, coatings, and construction products where weight reduction is a primary design objective. In syntactic foams, rigid composite materials produced by dispersing hollow microspheres in a resin matrix, they provide the low density and compressive strength required for deep-sea buoyancy modules, subsea pipeline insulation, and marine flotation devices. The selection of bead grade is critical in these applications, as the crush strength must exceed the hydrostatic pressure at the operating depth. In automotive and aerospace composite components, Hollow Glass Beads reduce the density of sheet moulding compound, bulk moulding compound, and reaction injection moulding parts, contributing to weight reduction targets. In thermal insulation coatings applied to pipelines, storage tanks, and building envelopes, they reduce the thermal conductivity of the coating and contribute to the insulating performance of the system. In oil well cementing, low-density grades reduce the density of cement slurries in wells where formation pressure is insufficient to support a conventional cement column.
