Product Overview
Natural Cenospheres are hollow, thin-walled microspheres of aluminosilicate glass recovered from the fly ash produced during pulverised coal combustion in thermal power stations. During combustion, mineral impurities in the coal, principally silica and alumina, are melted and expelled as fine droplets. A proportion of these droplets trap gases during solidification, forming hollow spherical particles that are lighter than water. They float to the surface of fly ash collection ponds, from which they are recovered by wet flotation and classified.
The resulting microspheres have a low true density, typically 0.7 to 0.9 g/cm³, good compressive strength relative to their density, and useful thermal insulation properties. Their chemical composition is predominantly silica and alumina, with minor quantities of iron oxide, calcium oxide, and trace elements depending on the coal source. The smooth, glassy surface contributes to low oil absorption and good dispersion in polymer and cementitious matrices.
Global supply of natural cenospheres is constrained by the availability of suitable fly ash sources and the efficiency of the flotation recovery process. ROCC Global monitors supply dynamics across Asia Pacific and European sources to ensure continuity of supply.
Cenospheres are supplied in grades differentiated by particle size distribution, true density, and crush strength. Surface-treated grades are available for applications requiring improved compatibility with polymer matrices. Quality verification includes true density measurement by helium pycnometry, particle size analysis, and chemical composition by XRF.
Applications and Performance
Cenospheres are used as a lightweight functional filler where density reduction is the primary objective. In lightweight concrete and cementitious grouts, they reduce unit weight whilst maintaining acceptable compressive strength, making them useful in oil well cementing where low-density slurries are required to prevent formation fracturing. In refractory and insulating castables, cenospheres reduce thermal mass and improve insulating performance at elevated temperatures, benefiting from their high melting point and low thermal conductivity. In the plastics and coatings industries, they are used in syntactic foams, deep-sea buoyancy modules, and lightweight composite panels, where their crush strength-to-density ratio allows them to withstand hydrostatic pressure at depth. In protective coatings, cenospheres reduce the density of applied films and contribute to thermal insulation performance in aerospace and marine applications.
