Sericite
Fine-grained muscovite mica with aspect ratio 20 to 80, used for barrier performance in coatings and soft-focus effects in cosmetics. Sericite is a fine-grained, silky variety of muscovite mica (KAl₂(AlSi₃O₁₀)(OH)₂) characterised by its **small platelet size, high aspect ratio**, and smooth, lustrous surface texture.
Sericite - Material sample
Product Overview
Sericite is a fine-grained, silky variety of muscovite mica (KAl₂(AlSi₃O₁₀)(OH)₂) characterised by its small platelet size, high aspect ratio, and smooth, lustrous surface texture. It is produced by the wet or dry grinding of high-purity muscovite mica ore, followed by classification to achieve the required particle size distribution. The term "sericite" is used commercially to describe fine-grained white mica with a characteristic silky sheen, and the material is sometimes referred to as sericitic mica or fine mica in industrial contexts.
The defining physical characteristics are its platelet morphology, high aspect ratio (typically 20:1 to 80:1), and smooth cleavage surfaces. These properties follow directly from the layered crystal structure of muscovite mica, in which strong covalent bonds within the silicate layers are combined with weaker ionic bonds between layers, allowing the mineral to cleave readily into thin, flexible platelets. The high aspect ratio is central to sericite's functional performance in coatings and polymer applications, where the platelets align parallel to the substrate surface and create a barrier to moisture and gas diffusion.
Sericite is chemically inert across a wide pH range, resistant to most organic solvents, and thermally stable to approximately 700°C. Its low coefficient of friction contributes to improved surface lubricity in polymer compounds and coatings.
In cosmetics, sericite is valued for its soft, silky feel, good adhesion to skin, and ability to scatter light in a way that minimises the appearance of fine lines and pores. ROCC Global sources sericite from established producers in Asia Pacific and Europe, with particle size analysis, aspect ratio characterisation, and heavy metal certification provided for cosmetic and sensitive industrial grades.
Applications and Performance
Sericite is used as a functional filler and surface modifier in cosmetics, coatings, engineering plastics, and speciality industrial applications. In cosmetic formulations including face powders, foundations, eyeshadows, and skincare products, sericite provides a soft, silky skin feel, good adhesion and spreadability, and a soft-focus optical effect that diffuses light and reduces the visibility of skin imperfections. In architectural and industrial coatings, it is used as a functional extender that improves barrier performance against moisture vapour transmission and reduces the permeability of the dried paint film. The parallel alignment of high-aspect-ratio platelets within the coating creates a tortuous diffusion path that slows the ingress of water and corrosive species, contributing to improved corrosion protection in anti-corrosion primers and barrier coatings. In engineering plastics and polymer compounds, sericite improves dimensional stability, reduces warpage in injection-moulded components, and contributes to improved surface finish and reduced coefficient of friction. In rubber compounds, it improves tear strength and reduces compression set.
